After the civil conflict in Somaliland, we saw complete destruction of all infrastructures. The hardest hit was the capital city of Somaliland Hargeisa. With no electricity services available, it forced business owners to come with their own solutions by investing in generators to power their own businesses and sell excess energy to neighbors.

These initiatives led to small utility companies to emerging across the city and they quickly had the capacity to power dozens of communities. Yet many of these companies hit encounters when it came to scaling and reducing infrastructure overheads. So thirty-nine trailblazing utility firms merged to drive down costs for customers, and meet the demands of a growing city.

In April 2016 SomPower was founded by thirty-nine small companies to make electricity accessible for every business and home. Today SomPower is the leading electric producer, distributor and commercial supplier to all corners of Hargeisa, Gebilley, Arabsiyo and Wajale. SomPower has gone from strength-to-strength by pioneering a more efficient golden grid that covers over 600km and became first to provide 24hr concurrent supply.

With over 500 local shareholders Sompower has been able to lead in innovative renewable power sources. We employed and trained over 1000 of the best local engineers, sales associates and outsourced subcontractors, contributing tens of millions of dollars towards in the local economy. SomPower is committed to our corporate social responsibility by giving back to our communities. Since 2016 we launched Lights-Up Program which providing free electric supply to Police Stations, Mosques and Public Hospitals. SomPower strives not only to lead in providing electricity services but to inspire a brighter tomorrow.

Power Generation

Power generation is the first component of the electricity services of SomPower. Our electricity is generated from diesel fueled generators and solar farms. Ba’ado, B-station & sheedaha are the main power stations which are currently on the line and supplying to Hargiesa and surroundings. SomPower has implemented 4MW solar farm which is the biggest renewable energy generation site in Somaliland at large.

Power Transmission

SomPower is currently supplying through 33KV and 11KV transmission lines throughout Hargeisa and surroundings. Electricity is regularly transmitted to substations near populated areas. The main components of our transmission system are:- Transmission concrete poles Transmission lines overhead/underground Substation transformers.

Power Distribution

Distribution is the final component of the Power of SomPower to serve its consumers. SomPower is the major distribution company which supplies over 90% of Hargeisa and surrounding regions.
